My story

Born in Bethesda, Maryland and raised in the Washington, DC area, Melvin has dedicated his entire life to ART. He cultivated a love for drawing at a very early age, specifically, the love for cartoons. As a result of one of his projects, his middle school English teacher suggested that he pursue commercial art as a career. Throughout middle school and high school, he perfected his skills. While attending Bowie State University in Prince Georges County, Maryland, Melvin was offered a Graphic Arts internship at Veterans Administration, currently known as the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

After receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree, he was hired full-time at VA as a Visual Information Specialist, where he created countless high-profile graphics to promote VA’s mission. Some of his most cherished achievements include designing the agency’s logo for “VA’s Core Values - I CARE (Integrity, Commitment, Advocacy, Respect and Excellence)” and creating numerous charcoal portraits of VA’s senior executives. Melvin retired from the VA in 2016 after 40 years. He left a legacy of excellence, dedication and quality service.

Today, as a freelance artist, Melvin creates caricatures, portraits, illustrations and wall murals using various mediums including oil paint, watercolor, acrylic, color pastel, charcoal and graphite pencils.

Melvin resides in Bowie, Maryland with his wife Patricia. They have four adult children and two grandchildren.
